Stubby’s Carvings – Sep 6 2008 by Dani

This post is long overdue. But sadly, this is not the post you were hoping for. I have started but there are so many things to describe I am writing about each scene and that scene’s most amazing item(s).

When I am done I will post the ‘best’ of series then additional as I re-write them. It is very hard to describe the items and detail that went into carvings and do them justice.

Plus I want to get Stubby’s take on the scene and maybe Pops or Moms.

In other words I want to do it right.

But to wet your appetite, when gB saw the main room of carvings she had lots of simple questions. The hardest for Stubby to answer was how he selected the wood to carve.

He really did not have an answer for her but he tried to describe what happens in his mind.

About three days later, gB went for a walk to ‘find inspiration’ as Stubby called it. She came back with a chunk of log she found in the woods.

Stubby stripped off the bark and rough sanded it then put it in his drying shed.

Oh Thursday he pulled it out and asked her what she saw. She described her house and ponies and pointed out where the hills would be and where the road and dam was at.

But she could not decide on the river. Stubby said good and put it back in the shed.

Early Friday morning gB found him carving on the steps of the dock. He told her she could not watch, at least not yet. He was trying to see what she had seen. She was disappointed but understood plus she had the ‘war’ on her mind.

This morning Stubby gave the wood back to her and told her to study it and see what she thought. He had carved her house, the barn, her ponies and the hill in two-dimensions.

She liked it just as it was but he told her there was a lot of work left to do. He asked her to study it more and see if she saw anything else.

When she showed it to Mom, Mom studied it for several minutes and asked a few questions. Then she handed her a pencil and told her to draw what she saw. She told her not to worry, she was sure that Stubby could erase anything she didn’t like without hurting anything.

Stubby sneaked a peek this morning even though he promised he wouldn’t until she was done.

He told Red that she had more imagination then he did. He walked away whistling.

Just now I saw Liz and gB bent over something. It was the wood and Liz was giving her suggestions. gB pointed out a section that reminded her of the first time Liz saw the barn and her surprise it was stocked with horses. They laughed about it and Liz left.

When gB left I looked and there was a good drawing of Liz looking at the barn.

It was perfect, just like the end carving will turn out.
