Stubby’s Wood World Three – Oct 1 2008 by Dani

Stubby’s ‘village’ room is a replica of our village as he likes to call it but it covers several square miles.

Walking into the room you notice built-in cabinets in a U shape all about four feet tall. The cabinets look like Captain’s work and I later found out that Captain did indeed build and install them but never saw the finished product.

To view his village you start on your left as soon as you enter the room. There are several trees, all carved by Stubby surrounding his ‘old’ cabin. There are bushes and tall grass and even flowers covering the ‘floor’ of his woods.

The trees appear to have leafs on them but on closer inspection they are all carved wood – Stubby said shavings from Captain’s woodshop. I pulled on one tree top at Lisa’s direction and it pulled off. It looked like a head of broccoli or cauliflower and had a small peg on the bottom that ‘plugged’ back into the top of the tree. There were even ‘dead’ leafless trees scattered around.

All the trees had bark that looked real but closer inspection showed it was all carved and Stubby had somehow colored it afterwards.

Running through the woods very close to the cabin was actual running water that was a grey-mud color and sparkled. It was Stubby’s creation and it looked real.

The cabin was a real log cabin, cut trees fitted together with what looks like cement between them.

Stubby told me they used to get gravel from the local lime quarry, mix it with sand, mud and water from the river and after a week it was just like concrete.

The walls were well insulated – he could build a fire in the morning and the cabin would still be warm at supper time.

They used smaller gravel for the inside walls and it looked almost like drywall but not quite as smooth.

Lisa showed me a picture of his cabin and the miniature was a perfect replica.

A narrow road led away from the cabin towards our place. A new driveway was cut through the woods when he built his new cabin directly to the main road.

The narrow road is still here but is overgrown in spots. I have ridden it several times on a 4-wheeler or horseback.

I recognized the trees and rocks that we use as landmarks. I bet if I took video while I rode along the road and compared it to Stubby’s replica it would be almost perfect.

But that replica ended abruptly and another started. It was the same woods but modern day. Stubby’s new cabin and the new road were now visible.

Stubby said that is the only part of the entire village that he left alone. The rest of the village is updated at time goes on.

One cabin burned and there are just timbers left now – the miniature replica shows the burned out timbers. In a drawer under that section is a carving of the cabin before it burned.

It can be put back in the replica very easily. It is almost eerie.

The detail makes you think that it takes hours and hours to do each piece. The next post about the Wood World will explain how he does it.
