Today I met with the architects and engineers about installing extra windows on Annie’s floor and a balcony on the south side that will hang over the next building. Pops also wants to change a couple of stairways and add some walls and windows.

We were talking to these guys and when I mentioned the balcony the price suddenly went up because they would have to get a variance on something or rather. And two windows that Annie really wanted would require extra this or that and in the end the original quote doubled.

Annie and Cindy came home and asked several questions and then Annie asked one of them to follow her and they went into a stairway that is common to all floors but once the door is closed you have to go all the way to the basement to get out.

I forget what they call it – secured access or limited access or something like that.

About two minutes later Cindy asked something about the roof changes they wanted and she took the other guy up to the roof. Pops and I were talking and he was trying to get in touch with a contractor friend. He felt like he was getting screwed and it is not even his concern.

A few minutes later Pops hung up and told me to stall these guys – his friend was trying to get someone else over to give us an estimate and to reach someone at the zoning office about variances.

Annie walked back in, then Cindy and finally the two guys – both of them not looking at anything but the floor.

Annie told me she had solved all their problems and Cindy asked her guy if they had any more problems. He shook his head no.

Then Annie asked them to put their quotes in writing and get them to us before 5 pm – it was 2 pm at the time.

That’s when Cindy reminded Annie that her friend from the building inspector would be here at 4:30 and both guys said they’d get their quotes here by 4:15.

Annie and Cindy thanked them then went over to the kitchen. The guys shook both our hands and when I started to talk, Pops interrupted me and said we needed to talk to the others first.

The guys left and I was almost in tears. Annie and Cindy came out and told us that all problems had been solved – we would be getting the ‘new neighbors’ discount and they would start work two hours after we signed the papers.
